Moonstone Lore
Moonstone takes place in the land of Tauber, a mythical isle of fantasy and fairytale where humans, goblins, faeries, gnomes, giants, fauns, trolls, merfolk and more, all thrive under the golden sun and pearlescent moons.
These days, Tauber is both turbulent but also relatively peaceful; there is little to no war, and most disagreements are seen as nothing more than squabbles or differences of opinion.
However, when the moons shine bright on a clear night the moonstones appear.
Sprouting out of the ground like so many crystalline toadstools, moonstones are both mysterious and valuable. The Wizards at the Tower of Grommel offer a fine sum of gold for any moonstones that are brought to them intact. The trouble, however, as soon as the light of the blazing sun touches them, moonstones will disappear as if nothing more than dust.
Still, the leaders of both Commonwealth and Dominion send forth their warriors, magicians and rogues to secure the moonstones to sell to the mysterious Wizards. The Leshavult seek stones for money, but also for their own arcane reasons. Shades, once thought lost to the ages, are skulking in abandoned cities and many fear that the time of peace, prosperity and unlimited teacakes is coming to an end…
The Timeline of Tauber

Reading Order
Despite being relatively small, Tauber is a fascinating place with a rich history and a myriad of cultures. Moonstone is set during a particularly turbulent time in Tauber’s history, with one overarching storyline told across our books.
Book One: Rulebook
Designed to introduce you to the game, the Rulebook mostly contains vignettes and introductions to the various peoples and cultures across Tauber, as well as the playable characters. The timeline (also available as a video above) plus these chapters feed into the broader narrative:
The Peace of Machburg Hall
The Wyrdwood
Dust
Tales from Tauber Vol I: Treasures and Tyrants of Tauber
The Treasures and Tyrants of Tauber provides an introduction to the Leshavult Faction and information about parts of Tauber too. This is an in-world document, a travel journal written by Professor Boffinsworth, and adds context before the broader narrative begins.
Note, this isn’t typically available on general sale but can usually be purchased during Kickstarters and other special sales.
Book Wyrms Scenario
Not technically a book, but a free download for a Story Scenario: Book Wyrms is set before the events in The Arising.
Book Two: The Arising
This is where the fun really begins! Lore-wise The Arising is split into three: the first are the small bios, providing background flavour for each of the playable characters. Second, the Story Scenarios feed into the broader narrative either as side events or planting seeds for things yet to come… Last, but certainly not least, the book contains a novella that begins the overarching Moonstone story.
The Fate of Eric
In 2022 we ran a Community Event, where players took part in a series of games to decide which Faction Eric the Squire should ultimately join as champion. We released a series of stories to accompany the weeks of gameplay and these stories occur during Book Three. These stores are still available to read via our Downloads section, or you can watch them thanks to Out of the Breach on YouTube.
Tales from Tauber Vol II: The Doomsday Report
The second of our in-world documents, The Doomsday Report is written by Tabby the Librarian during the events of Book Three. The Doomsday Report details who and what the Shades are, the threat to Tauber, plus background on some of those who were alive at the time of the Forgotten King’s first rule.
Note, this isn’t typically available on general sale but can usually be purchased during Kickstarters and other special sales.
Book Three: Title TBC
Work is underway on the third book, which will provide the second part of the larger story. Keep an eye on our social media channels, or sign up to our mailing list to receive the latest news on the book’s progress.
What’s Next?
We’re planning to release at least three books in the series in total, so there’s still more of the broader narrative to come! We also have plans to expand the Tales From Tauber booklet and video series - please keep an eye out for announcements via our socials and our newsletter.
